How To Recognize Progress: You Are Further Along Than You Think

August 01, 2017

You’ve made more progress than you think.

Have you ever sat with yourself and thought that you have not changed much? You think you haven’t made much progress. You think you should be a lot farther along than you are? That is how I was feeling. I was feeling like I had not made much progress at all in the past few years. I began to compare myself to all of the people around me who seem to be accelerating in life. The goals they had set were coming into fruition. The hard work and dedication finally paying off. Such a wonderful thing to watch.

Then I got to thinking… I haven’t progressed at all. I felt like I was the same as I was a few years ago.  Not much happening. It is a slippery slope when you start comparing yourself to other people and their lives. Add some social media posts to that and you have yourself a recipe for disaster. Funny thing is shortly thereafter this moment, I got a call from someone I had not seen in years. We agreed to get together to catch up.

Sometimes it takes a date with your past to recognize the amazing present that you have. When I began to talk about me and the things that I had accomplished, I became extremely grateful and thankful for all that I have. I also realized some of the goals that I had set for myself years ago had come to fruition after all.

So how will I keep it going?

I decided that going forward I was actually going to keep track of my life and things that I am doing. I used to have a gratitude journal that I would write down everything I was grateful for. I don’t know when I stopped writing in this journal, but I have decided to make it my practice again. I also decided to pay more attention to my present and be thankful for it.

What I realized is that I have made more progress than I thought. Maybe you have as well. We only live once why not try...

    1. It takes some time to make them a habit but when you do it is a game changer.
